Wildcat women’s hoops stymies Finlandia in rout

MARQUETTE - While the Northern Michigan University men's basketball team put on an offensive clinic with 129 points against Finlandia, the Wildcat women put on a defensive demonstration.

The 'Cats held the Lions to only seven points in the first half en route to a 78-21 victory on Tuesday night at the Berry Events Center in Marquette.

The NMU women now hit the road this Thanksgiving weekend to play in the Ashland Tournament in Ashland, Ohio on Saturday against former GLIAC rival Mercyhurst at 4 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on Sunday against Urbana.

On Tuesday, the NMU defense held the Lions to 7-of-48 shooting, or 14 percent, from the floor. FU was 6-of-10 from the free throw line and the 'Cats also forced 26 turnovers.

NMU sophomore guard Lauren Gruber led the team's 13 scorers with 10 points. Sophomore guard Sarah Miller and freshman forward Alyson Matkovich each had nine points.

Freshman forward Nea Makela of Finland led NMU with seven rebounds with six coming on the defensive boards.
