Steve Peffers, superintendent of the Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency, came to the board meeting and during public comment made the announcement, surprising Derocher and others at the meeting.
"Jim has many years of service to education, many years of being superintendent here in Negaunee, has overseen a variety of projects, increased academic achievement from students and has positioned Negaunee as one of our premiere districts in not only our region but in the state as well," Peffers said.
Region I encompasses the entire Upper Peninsula, with 65 school districts and seven intermediate school districts. Derocher was nominated by the Negaunee school board and was selected by a vote of his peers, Peffers said.
"I would say this is a very important recognition from his peers that he was awarded," Peffers said.
During his public comment, Peffers showed a video where Derocher was congratulated by MASA Region I President Michele Lemire, Michigan High School Athletic Association Executive Director Jack Roberts and Lou Guizzetti, the executive director for Schools Employer Trust and Schools Employer Group. Each said a few words about why Derocher deserved the award.
"We are very pleased to share a big congratulations to the Negaunee Area Public Schools," Lemire said in the video. "Jim is well deserving. He's known as a team player, a collaborator, someone who has good background on school finance, school policies and laws."
Derocher said he felt honored to receive the award and to be chosen by his fellow superintendents in the U.P.
"I knew that my board president was doing some work to nominate me but to be selected, I was surprised by it," Derocher said.
Derocher is now one of 10 superintendents in the running for the State Superintendent of the Year award, which will be announced at the end of January.
