NEGAUNEE - The Negaunee Public Schools Board of Education appointed a member to the board and approved a bid for the designing of the Lakeview Elementary School front entrance at its meeting Monday.

The board unanimously reappointed Greg Toutant to his position as board president. Superintendent Jim Derocher explained at the meeting Toutant's seat was supposed to be on the ballot this past election but wasn't due to a clerical mistake.

Toutant was appointed to the board in 2011 when former board member Dan Hintsala, whose term ran until 2014, stepped down. Appointed positions are only until the next election and then the position goes on the ballot. Toutant's term will end in 2014.

The board also approved a bid for the design of the front access of Lakeview Elementary School, awarding it to Integrated Designs Inc. for the amount of $6,050. According to Derocher, they hope to add 40 parking spots to the front, make the drop-off and pick-up area safer for students and possibly add a digital sign that can be changed from inside.

At the meeting, Derocher also asked the board members to think about possible options for the following year, when a projected 148 kindergarteners will begin attending Lakeview.

According to Derocher, in order to keep class sizes down the school would have to create to more kindergarten sections, but there isn't a single classroom currently going unused in the school.
