Northern swimmers top UW-Eau Claire in home meet

MARQUETTE - The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team hosted its second meet of the season Saturday, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 165-78 at the PEIF pool.

NMU took 12-out-of-13 event.

Sophomores Deborah Lawrence, Emily Brennan and Aspen McHugh finished at the top in the 200-yard freestyle.

Senior Lauren Cockles won the 50 freestyle with a time of 25:31, while junior Meghan Cepela (26.37) and sophomore Pamela Johnson (26.50) were right behind.

Sophomore Madisen Sechena placed first in the 400 IM, with sophomore Jordan Iverson and freshman Caitlyn Brenden in second and third, respectively.

Molly Kearny took both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, while the 400 medley relay team of sophomore Emily Bourguignon, senior Olga Budiansky, freshman Crystal Bennet and McHugh placed first with a time of 4:05.27.

Sophomores Tara Dowling of Marquette and Dakota Sechena finished in the top two places of the 1,000 freestyle.

Other NMU first place finishes included: Bourguignon in the 100 backstroke, Dowling in the 500 freestyle and Lawrence in the 100 butterfly.

Bennet finished with two additional first places, one in the 100 freestyle and the other in the 100 breaststroke.
