Supports Prop 2

November 1, 2012
The Mining Journal

To the Journal editor:

We have all heard parents say, "We want our kids to have it better than we did." Parents worry that the future might not be better. Grandparents might say the same thing in regard to grandchildren. Some of us also worry about our neighbor's children. There's plenty of worry to go around.

Politicians aren't afraid to tell us what we should worry about. They tell us about the deficit, Iran, taxes, China and immigration. They promise to fix everything for us. So, we vote for them and nothing changes. We feel powerless to change things, we get frustrated, and we continue to worry. We wish we could make the future brighter for our children and grandchildren.

Now is the time for wishes to come true. We ordinary folks finally have a way to provide security and opportunity for our kids, our grandkids and the neighbor kids. We don't have to wait for some self-serving politicians who might get around to it. In this election year, we have the power. Yes, we do. We really can make a difference.

We can give the next generation a chance to "have it better than we did," or at least have it just as good as we did. We can do this by guaranteeing that our children and grandchildren have a fighting chance to work for an honorable wage, with decent benefits, in a safe environment. It's what they deserve. All we have to do is vote yes on Proposal 2.

This is not about politics. This is not about unions. It's not about a power grab by special interests. Again, it's about giving our children and grandchildren a fighting chance. It's about their rights. It's about their self-worth. It's about the common good. It's about fairness and justice.

We know that workers' rights are under attack. It's not the first time. Those who are retired remember the struggle they had to fight for their rights. It was a tough battle. We can make that struggle a little easier. But we have to act. We must get out and vote.

Teddy Roosevelt once said, "In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing."

Please, do the right thing. Vote yes on Proposal 2.
