Miners’ Saari, Pats’ Jackson named top U.P. tennis coaches

MARQUETTE - Coaches Kyle Saari of Negaunee and Chris Jackson of Westwood, as well as several Superiorland female prep tennis players, have garnered top honors in All-Upper Peninsula selections for 2012.

Saari was named the Division 1 Coach of the Year and Jackson the top coach in Division 2. Both led their teams to respective U.P. team championships.

Local players making the All-U.P. list are:

Division 1

Singles - Maddy Gardiner, Marquette; and Abbi Kill and Allison Carlson, Negaunee. Honorable mention:Hannah Johnson, Marquette.

Doubles - Kate Garrow and Sam Schwemin, Marquette. Honorable mention: Ashley Anderson and Mandi Grasso, Negaunee; and Laura Slavsky and Madalyne Connon, Marquette.

Division 2

Singles - Sarah Massie, Westwood; and Jenna Hach and Eve Gendron, Munising. Honorable mention: Gabby Croley, Ishpeming; and Lydia Asplund and Brooke Luokkala, Gwinn.

Doubles -Kara Harrington and Alexis Forchini, Westwood; and Taylor Croley and Jordann Grigg, Ishpeming. Honorable mention: Haylee Lakenen and Taylor Aho, Gwinn; Megan McLaren and Sheena Sowa, Munising; and Taryn Moyle and Katie Rankinen, Westwood.
