MARQUETTE - The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team wraps up the 2012 season at home against Walsh (8-5-2 overall, 4-5-3 in GLIAC) at 4 p.m. today and Malone (1-12-1, 0-10-1) at noon on Sunday at the NMU Soccer Field.

At 3-12 overall and 2-9 in the GLIAC, the program will finish with a losing record and miss the GLIAC playoffs for the first time under head coach Matt Granstrand, who arrived at NMU from North Dakota in 2004.

NMU, which has been shutout eight times this season and blanked in four of its last five games, is led in scoring by senior Amelia Johnson's two goals and assist.

She's one of four players with a team-high two goals, including sophomores Taylor Smith and Tevun Sellers and freshman Gabriella Garza.

NMU will honor its four seniors on Sunday during Senior Day, including Johnson, defender Becky Fiorenza and midfielders Brekelle Sellers and Jenna Peplinski.

Fiorenza, who went by Becky Schmidt before getting married over the summer, and Johnson have never missed a game in four years at NMU, appearing in 74 matches. Johnson has 20 career goals and seven assists while Fiorenza has six goals and six assists.

Brekelle Sellers has two goals and eight assists in 69 games while Peplinski has appeared in 37 games.

Women's hoops opens 2012-13 with exhibition

The NMU women's basketball team will host Madonna (NAIA) at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Berry Events Center in one of two exhibition games prior to the Nov. 10 regular season opener at home against Davenport.

The 'Cats also play at Wisconsin-Superior (Division III) at 3 p.m. on Nov. 3.

NMU finished 13-14 overall last season and 9-10 in the GLIAC, which was good for third in the North Division and seventh overall. The Wildcats season ended with a 76-56 loss at Ashland in the first round of the GLIAC tournament.

The 2012-13 Wildcats feature no seniors after the gradation of leading scorer Chelsea Lyons (16.9 points per game average), who now plays professionally in Romania.

Katie Becker and Annie Rubendunst are Northern's only juniors on a roster made up of seven sophomores, three redshirt freshman and four true freshman. Sophomore guard Alyssa Colla is the team's leading returning scorer after averaging 8.7 points per game a year ago.

Volleyball making final road trip

The NMU volleyball team will look to strengthen its hold on a GLIAC tournament berth at Grand Valley State at 7 p.m. on today and at Ferris State at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

At 15-9 overall and 7-4 in league play, NMU is fifth in the North Division and tied for fifth with South-leading Wayne State in the overall standings, making the Wildcats a sixth seed with seven games to play.

The Lakers (18-4 overall, 8-3 in GLIAC) are a game up on NMU while the Bulldogs (17-5, 10-1) are a game back of Northwood for the North Division lead.

Ashland and Malone sit at 6-5 in league play while Saginaw Valley State and Findlay at 5-6 are on the outside looking in on the league playoffs.

NMU hits the road following a pair of wins at home last weekend against Ohio Dominican and Tiffin.

Junior Lina Lopes leads NMU in kills with 283, while junior Kalli Herron has 270. Junior transfer Kellisha Harley has a team-high 955 assists and senior Kalin Zimmerman has a team-high 243 digs.
