MARQUETTE, Mich. - Donald Arthur Papin, age 86, of Marquette, went to the Lord on Saturday, October 20, 2012, following an automobile related accident.

Donald was born on May 5, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised by his grandparents and, following their deaths, moved to Marquette to live with an aunt. As a boy, he attended a school for the hearing impaired. He grew up in South Marquette and was well known in the neighborhood and was befriended by many. He was a fixture at Pete's Confectionary corner store. Following his aunt's death in 1968, Donald began renting a small house on Jefferson Street, which is where he resided for the remainder of his life.

Donald changed the lives of those he met. He was an extremely cheerful person and was always more than happy to help anyone who needed it. His biggest joy was devoting his time to helping others. He would help build houses or baby-sit. In his later years, he would often volunteer for the elderly, driving them to appointments, assist with their shopping, and was very active in the deaf community. If his neighbors were going out of town, he would watch their houses and care for their pets. Even in his 80s, he would collect apples for his friends that hunted, and even a horse that he never ever saw. He just loved to help out. He was known to deliver the mail daily to his neighbors, and then stay for coffee and a visit. He brightened up the days of many. Donald was always invited to family parties, special occasions, and holidays at the homes of all his neighbors. On any given holiday he would have multiple homes to visit. He was respected and loved by everyone that he came into contact with.
