MARQUETTE - The Marquette Sentinels Under-19 AA girls hockey team posted a win, loss and tie in a three-game series against the Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats, a Bantam team, in Marquette last weekend.
The Sentinels opened with a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon even though they fell behind three times during the game.
The Soo led 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before goals by Marquette's Kirsten Iwanski in the first period, Allison Carlson in the second and Brock Neslon in the third each tied the game. Assists on those goals were credited to Melissa Casey, Sydney Cornock and Iwanski.
But with 1:40 left to play, Iwanski scored her second goal on a feed from Montana Viitala for the game-winner.
Hannah Riesland stopped 31 of 34 shots to earn the victory in the Sentinels' net.
Game 2 on Saturday evening ended in a 0-0 tie as Marquette's Carley Maanika stopped all 19 shots she faced and the Wildcats' Cody Deevey turned away each of the 35 shots Marquette took.
Game 3 was a 1-0 win for the Soo despite Marquette's 40-22 shots-on-goal advantage as Riesland and Maanika split goaltending duties in the Sentinels net.
Marquette returns to action the first weekend in November for the Icebreaker Cup in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
