To the Journal editor:
I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Gwinn community for their support of the Iron Man Tournament held at Gwinn High School on Oct. 1.
The Iron Man is an annual fundraiser put on by the GHS volleyball teams to raise money for equipment and other program needs. This year it pitted the J.V. girls' volleyball team against the faculty and then against the J.V. football players.
We also saw match-ups between the varsity girls' volleyball team and an alumni team and then versus the varsity football players. It was an evening of fun and laughter. Everyone at the gym that night left with a smile. These types of events are not only talked about in school the next day, but they are memories our youth and community will cherish for years to come.
A big thank you to the area businesses that supplied prizes for the serving contest and to the parents, students, Booster Club members, and athletic director for doing promo work, acting as refs and emcees, taking care of music and lighting, dressing up as the mascot, working at the admission table, selling T-shirts, and running the concession stand. Most of all, thank you to all who attended and generously opened your wallets to support the volleyball teams.
Great things are happening with Gwinn athletics. There is a definite shift to the positive. Instead of an individual sport or individual athlete approach, we are looking at the big picture. It is a we and us attitude that has the whole community involved and proud to be Modeltowners.
