MARQUETTE - The host Marquette Senior High School varsity and JV teams will be joined by four other Upper Peninsula schools at the U.P. Championships high school soccer tournament to be held in Marquette on Saturday.
Two fields at the Kaufman Sports Complex in north Marquette will host nine games starting at 10:30 a.m., with the championship match set for late afternoon.
The Marquette Senior High School varsity team will be joined in Pool B by Kingsford and Ironwood, while the MSHS JV is paired with Iron Mountain and Sault Ste. Marie in Pool A.
A team can earn up to 10 points per game, which will consist of two 30-minute halves and no overtime. Six points goes to the winning team, none for a loss, three for a tie, one for a shutout and one per goal up to three.
Each pool's top point earner will square off for the championship at 5:30 p.m. At 4 p.m., the second-place teams face each other on one field and the third-place teams on the other.
In case of inclement weather, which organizers will decide on Friday afternoon, the tourney would be moved to the following Saturday.
Admission is $5 per person, with proceeds to be used by the city of Marquette for field upkeep and improvements. Concessions from an area restaurant and bathrooms will be available at the pavilion at the far end of the parking lot.
