MARQUETTE-The Upper Peninsula Health Plan is one of the nation's best Medicaid health plans, according to a recent national ranking of Medicaid health plans.

The health plan ranks 23rd among Medicaid managed-care plans in the United States, according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance Medicaid Health Insurance Plan Rankings 20122013. It ranks seventh among Michigan health plans.

Honored Medicaid health plans are surveyed and ranked by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The ratings reflect consumer surveys, success in preventing and treating illness, and NCQA accreditation scores. For this year's recognition, UPHP received its highest ratings for patient treatment and disease prevention.

The health plan's successful rating is a direct result of sound business practices by the plan and its many partners. President and Chief Executive Officer Dennis H. Smith said. "We have an excellent staff, as well as strong bonds with our partner hospitals, physicians, and health departments."

NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health-care quality.
