MARQUETTE - Local breast cancer survivors of all ages are being honored by J.C. Penney in the Westwood Mall, as the store's salon is offering free haircuts and styles to survivors during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"Giving back to the community is very important to J.C. Penney," said store Manager Edie Newcomb. "This was a very important cause the company thought would be a good thing to help raise awareness for, do some pampering, give something extra special to cancer survivors themselves. It's a great opportunity to raise awareness for breast cancer research."

For every free haircut or style given, J.C. Penney is also donating $1 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. It's goal is to reach $50,000.

Newcomb said the reaction so far as been "very positive."

"The word is out on the Internet. We're having customers call us and make appointments," Newcomb said. "We're doing, in the store, a round-up on their charge ... We can raise a significant amount of money that way."

The round-up program allows customers at the salon to round their purchase up to the nearest dollar, with the extra bit of change donated to charity. Newcomb said that was an effective way to raise money, even if it's just pennies at a time.

Salon leader Barb Bahrman said those survivors looking to participate but who don't want to cut their hair can come in for a free shampoo and style as well.

Bahrman said she was happy the salon was offering the free cuts and styles.

"I like we're trying to give back, and it's something all the stores are doing," she said. "J.C. Penney, it's their thing."

Employees will also switch up their standard black and white uniforms this month in favor of black and pink, that well-known breast cancer awareness color sported by many in October.

The salon is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

The free cuts and styles will be offered for the entire month of October.
