ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming City Council awarded a bid Wednesday for the demolition of two downtown buildings.

The council voted unanimously to accept Associated Constructors, LLC's bid for $40,705 to demolish buildings at 201 E. Division St. and 213 S. First St. Moyle Trucking and Excavating Inc.'s bid for $77,600 was the only other one received.

According to City Manager Jered Ottenwess, the demolition of these adjacent buildings has been desired for a long time.

"It's deplorable and falling down," Ottenwess said.

Ottenwess said the doors of the buildings had been open constantly so the city went in to put padlocks on them for safety proposes. While doing so, city employees discovered the buildings were full of mold and there were holes in the ceiling allowing water to get in, he said.

Under the unsafe building ordinance, Ottenwess was able to order the demolition of the buildings. The owner of 201 E. Division St. asked that the Notice of Violation for the demolition of the building be appealed. A hearing was held in August to hear the appeal, which was denied. The demolition order of 213 S. First St. was never appealed. The owners were given until Oct. 7 to demolish the buildings themselves.

"I'm really excited to get the demolition under way," Ottenwess said.
