MARQUETTE - Authorities say someone apparently tried to get illegal drugs into the Marquette Branch Prison by tossing them over a fence to an inmate.

Police said the failed attempt happened Monday night in a wooded area on Marquette Branch Prison property.

State police and the Michigan Department of Corrections said a female tried to throw the drugs over the fence and she was taken into custody along with three males found nearby. They were later set free as the investigation into the attempt continues. Names weren't immediately released.

The corrections department says what appeared to be illegal drugs also were found in a prisoner's cell. They say such an attempt to get drugs into the prison is unusual.

Troopers from the Negaunee post declined to comment further today on the incident. Corrections Department officials in Marquette and Lansing were unavailable for comment before press time today.
