MARQUETTE - A Marquette man facing charges related to the sexual abuse of a child is headed toward a jury trial in Marquette County Circuit Court.

Axel Gabriel Acevedo, 28, has informed the court he plans to plead not guilty by mail to one count each of first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct (person under 13, defendant 17 years of age or older) and one count of accosting children for immoral purposes.

Acevedo, who appeared in court for a scheduling conference Friday, is set for an April 23 jury trial.

A registered sex offender, Acevedo was arrested in August after the Marquette City Police Department determined he was living in Marquette and had not registered his address.

Acevedo was living in the same residence as the alleged victim, a 12-year-old boy, according to police.

Police said in August that shortly after notifying the other occupants of the building of Acevedo's sex offender status, the alleged victim's mother notified the department that she believed her son had been assaulted by Acevedo. After conducting interviews, police arrested Acevedo and executed a search warrant at his residence.

Acevedo remains lodged in the Marquette County Jail on a $650,000 cash bond.
