MARQUETTE - Marquette scored just enough to counteract a fluky goal scored by Rhinelander, Wis., for a 2-1 high school soccer victory at the Kaufman Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Rhinelander took a 1-0 lead just past the midpoint of the first half when Redmen junior netminder Tony Lackey and a teammate attempted to ward off a shot. But the ball rebounded off of one of them and to a Rhinelander player for an easy score, according to MSHS coach Matt Tebo.
With time running down in the first half, Marquette (10-4-3) tied the score 1-1 when center midfielder Andrew Banitt split two defenders and passed the ball forward. With a defender on him, fellow sophomore striker Max Bednarek took the ball and popped it over the sprawling goalie's head.
The Redmen scored the game-winner eight to nine minutes into the second half on penalty kick scored by senior center midfielder Billy Mullett.
