Getting to know the West End

A Northern View

September 30, 2012
By ADELLE WHITEFOOT - Journal Ishpeming Bureau (awhitefoot@miningjournal.net) , The Mining Journal

For the past year and a half I have been a photographer and writer at The Mining Journal, but as of Sept. 17 I started working out of the Ishpeming bureau office as the new West End reporter.

As the part-time photographer, I primarily took pictures at sporting events. Because of this as pect of my job, I got to know some of the people in the sports community in Marquette, Negaunee and Ishpeming. But - beyond knowing where all the schools are, who coaches are, who athletic directors are and which gyms have the best lighting for photography - I didn't really get a chance to get to know the people in the West End.

I feel like I really know a lot of the people in the Marquette community - who to talk to about what -when it came to reporting a story.

Most of that is due to my work at Northern Michigan University's student newspaper The North Wind.

Now that I'm working as the Ishpeming bureau reporter, I'm really looking forward to getting to know the people out here in the West End in the same way.

During my week of training, former Ishpeming bureau reporter Johanna Boyle, who I've replaced, took me around the area and introduced me to as many people as possible so I would be able to put a face with a name. And the people I met, and would possibly be talking to on a regular basis, would be able to put a face with my name.

Meeting everyone I possibly could was probably the best thing that Johanna did for me during my training - and I thank her for that.

It definitely has made me feel comfortable calling sources up, and I hope it makes them feel more comfortable about talking to me.

It's been two weeks since I started in Ishpeming and I've felt very welcomed by everyone I've met. I hope that continues to be the case and I look forward to building a strong relationship with this community in the years ahead.
