ISHPEMING - The Malton Road extension has started construction after years of planning and making adjustments.

The Malton Road extension will connect U.S. 41 to Business Route M-28 between Ishpeming and Negaunee, and provide better access to the hematite heights area of Ishpeming. When the city of Ishpeming bought the property in 2003, city officials had planned to extend Malton Road, City Manager Jered Ottenwess said.

"It's good to finally see it under way," Ottenwess said, adding that the construction seems to be making steady progress.

"It's a straightforward road construction project," Ottenwess said. "It will be done by the end of fall."

At this week's Ishpeming Downtown Development Authority meeting, project manager Brian Savolainen of U.P. Engineers and Architect Inc. gave an update of how the project is coming along.

"There have been a few minor bumps in the road as we're building the road," Savolainen said. "We ran into some undesirable material early last week, but it didn't turn out to be as bad as we thought. We just had to push a little extra dirt around for that."

In addition, the construction crew also ran into two large foundations, Savolainen said.

"The crew basically had to dig big holes next to (the foundations) and bury them," Savolainen said. "No one really knows what they were for. They were big enough that it looks like they were for some big item."

According to Savolainen, a few minor adjustments have been to the alignment of the road but the project is moving steadily forward.

The route for the extension was approved in May by the Ishpeming City Council, and the DDA is funding the project through bond proceeds. The road work is costing $386,500.

The extension of Malton Road started on the Business Route M-28 side and will run to the section of Malton Road that already connects to U.S. 41.
