Marjorie P. Kananen

NEGAUNEE, Mich. - Marjorie P. Kananen, 85, of 104 Malton Road, Negaunee died at 6:50 a.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had been a patient since April of 2012.

Marjorie was born January 31, 1927, in Adrian, Mich., to Royale and Helen (Hardy) Stetson, was a graduate of Adrian High School, Class of 1945 and attended Adrian College. She was a Negaunee resident since 1955.

Mrs. Kananen was a former member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Negaunee. She was a member of the Negaunee Lady Elks and the Daughters of the American Revolution. In her younger years she bowled in the local bowling leagues, golfed and had been a member of Wawonowin Country Club. She and her husband, Art, enjoyed horse racing and often went to the tracks in the Detroit and Chicago areas. Marge was small in stature and was known for her feisty attitude, her kindness to strangers, and her big smile. Those who knew her loved her and will truly miss her.

Surviving are her husband, Arthur H. Kananen; one son, Stetson Haight of Prescott, Ariz.; his daughter, Christine Haight, who is a student at the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo.; 2 stepsons: Dan and Dean Kananen, both of Marquette; 3 stepdaughters: Kathy Pizziola, Cindi Glugla and Barbi Voegtline; special friends Jan Hebbard and Deb Carey; 1 niece and 1 nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 sons: Scot, Gregory and Stephen Haight; 1 daughter, Christine Haight, a sister, Charlotte Gittus.

Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Koskey Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Solberg officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. until the time of services at 5:00 p.m. at the Koskey Funeral Home on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Elks National Foundation and the U.P.A.W.S. (formerly the Marquette County Humane Society) 84 Snowfield Road, Negaunee, MI 49866 in Mrs. Kananen's memory.

The family gives special thanks to the staffs of Eastwood Nursing Center and Woodland Senior Living for their loving care of Marge.
