GARDEN CORNERS - Superior Central stayed in contention for the Central U.P. Conference lead, gaining a 25-11, 22-25, 25-14, 25-23 volleyball triumph Monday night over Big Bay de Noc.

The victory enabled the Cougars to improve to 4-1 in the CUP and retain a share of the league lead with Mid Peninsula (7-1 CUP, 7-3 overall). The league leaders meet at Superior Central Thursday night.

Lindsey Richmond led the Cougars (4-2 overall) in serving with 11 points and five aces. Teslyn Tyner added six points and five aces. Kelsey Coleman, Kyla Johns and Ally Bray had six points and two aces apiece.

"We wanted to give our younger kids some playing time and we put them in the second and fourth games," said Cougars' coach Chris Bray. "This was a tough match for them. But for the most part they did pretty well."

Coleman also had six kills, three blocks, 10 assists and 12 digs. Richmond added five aces, 28 assists and 10 digs, and Vanessa Freberg collected 10 digs.

"We did a pretty good job defensively," said coach Bray. "I don't think we gave them too many kills. We were pretty aggressive at the net, but we still need to clean up a few things with our hitting. We're still not at our best yet."
