ISHPEMING - The Ishpeming City Council has scheduled a special meeting Friday to discuss the bids for street repairs.

The meeting is at 9 a.m. at city hall.

City Manager Jered Ottenwess said has been recommneded that the city focus on the worst streets. The council has the option to approve using the city's budget to pay for the cost of the repairs.

"The whole reason we are having this special meeting is to approved the bids or not," Ottenwess said. "We are very limited on time to do the paving this season."

A special assessment had been considered to help pay for the street repairs, but was was canceled earlier this month. The special assessment would have allowed the city to split the cost of street repairs with property owners bordering those streets.

Through working with the engineering firm GEI Consultants, however, the city determined the scope of the work and the cost would have exceeded the revenue generated by the special assessment.

Also on special meeting agenda is the city manager evaluation, which is done annually. Council members were given forms in August to fill out and give to the mayor, who will summarize the comments and present them at the meeting.
