Anton G. ‘Tony’ Crnkovich

NEGAUNEE, Mich. - Anton G. "Tony" Crnkovich, formerly of Sunnyside Estates, Ishpeming, died at 8:40 p.m. on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Eastwood Nursing Center.

Anton was born July 13, 1918 in Mohawk, MI to Anton and Anna (Berbanac) Crnkovich and attended Calumet Schools. Tony served in the Civilian Conservation Corp in the late 1930s. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, serving with the 107th Engineer in the European Theater. He was employed as a hoist operator for the C&H Mining Co. from the early 1950s until 1969, and then moved to this area, working for CCI at the Mather 'B' from 1969-79, finally retiring from the Empire Mine at the age of 65.

Anton also worked for the US Steel Corp. on the Great Lakes fleet in 1967 and 1968.

Mr. Crnkovich was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, and was a life member of V.A. Romo Post #3165, Negaunee and the Negaunee Eagles. He enjoyed being on the ice and was an avid figure skater.

Surviving are 2 sons: Tony (Mary Ann) Crnkovich of Lanse and Steve Crnkovich of California; step-son, David (Nancy Kiertzner) Karhi of Negaunee; step-daughter, Maxine (Robert) Jurczyk of Massachusetts; 2 brothers: Charles Crnkovich of Florida and Robert (Esther) Crnkovich of Indiana; a sister, Josephine Pietz of Wisconsin; 2 grandchildren: Tim Cholette and Sarah (Jason) Carr; and 3 great-grandchildren. Anton was preceded in death by his parents; his 1st wife, Eunice (Karvola) Crnkovich in 1976; his 2nd wife, Celina (Lequia) Karhi in 2011; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Cholette; and 2 brothers: Matt and Steve.

Honoring Anton's wishes, no public services will be held. Interment will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
