MARQUETTE, Mich. - Shawn Michael Dollar, age 34, of Marquette, entered eternal life.
Born May 14, 1978 in Marquette, the son of Pete and Jackie (Boxer) Dollar, Shawn was raised in Marquette and was a 1996 graduate of the Marquette Senior High School. He enrolled at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, pursuing a career in business in the hopes of becoming an accountant like his grandfather, Jack.
As a youth, Shawn possessed an outgoing personality, infectious smile and laugh, and made friends easily. Filled with these qualities and youthful adventure, Shawn left Central and moved to Orlando, Florida where he stayed for a brief time, enjoying the warm beaches, Florida lifestyle, and working as a bartender. Shawn returned home to Marquette where he could be close to family, and was employed as a bartender at various local establishments.

He eventually moved to Chicago, where he could spread his wings, working as a bartender-manager. Finally, Shawn decided it was time to return to Marquette and resumed employment as a bartender-manager, but this time he resolved to continue his education by enrolling at Northern Michigan University with a focus on communications. He also had a passion for sports, from his earliest years, and worked at the YMCA in their Wellness Center. He enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge of sports with whoever was interested. Most were amazed at his recall of sports statistics and trivia, especially those of the Chicago Bears, Detroit Red Wings, and Detroit Tigers, his favorite teams. To family and friends he was loyal and happy. He was a familiar sight around Marquette, riding his road bike, commuting through the streets.
He loved traveling and taking little vacations, family functions, playing fantasy football, attending live sporting events, parties, and was known in multiple social circles by the nickname "Dollar."
Shawn is survived by his mother, Jackie Boxer; father, Pete (Marilyn Syria) Dollar; and sister, Kimber Hansen; his maternal grandmother, Joanne "Grandma B" all of Marquette; maternal aunts and uncles, Jim Boxer of Marquette, Sandy (Boris) Martysz of Marquette; cousins, Boris (Coreen) Martysz and their children, Ethan, Andrew, and Austin; Ivan (Susan) Martysz and children Calla and Elli; and Sarah (Don) Weber and children, Jack and Sam; paternal aunts and uncles, Christine (Jack) Schneider and children Stephanie (Mark) Gaby, Brian (Mary Beth) Bocklund and children Daniel and Elizabeth; Jan (Louie) Londo and children Luke and Abby; and Georgia Dollar. Also surviving are other relatives, friends, and a close group of friends Shawn called his "brothers," and his mom's dog, Teddie.
Shawn was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Jack Boxer; paternal grandparents, Robert and Eleanor Dollar; and his childhood canine companion, Snuggles.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Redeemer Lutheran Church on Friday, September 21, from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at 6:00 p.m. Rev. Steve Hulke will officiate and burial will be made in the Park Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be his "brothers" (and you know who you are). This celebration of Shawn's life is in remembrance of a terrific gentleman who surrounded himself with good friends, good food, and good times. For those attending the service, the family requests colorful, casual, and sports attire.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the work of the YMCA or to Marquette Senior High School for a sports scholarship to be named in Shawn's memory. Envelopes will be available at the service.
