MARQUETTE - The death of a Marquette man whose body was found Friday in an abandoned downtown building is now being investigated as suspicious, according to police.

Shawn Michael Dollar, 34, was reported missing Thursday and his body was found on the first floor in the abandoned building located at 231 W. Washington St. on Friday afternoon.

That discovery came shortly after family and friends organized a search party for the missing man, who was last seen Sept. 8.

"At this time, we're investigating it as a suspicious death, trying to figure out how it happened," said Detective Capt. Gordon Warchock of the Marquette City Police Department.

Warchock said police had determined a cause of death, but are not releasing it as the investigation continues.

Officers with the Michigan State Police Crime Lab were at the scene for several hours Friday and the alleyway behind the building was blocked off.

On Saturday, a memorial of flowers and candles was placed outside the back entrance to the building. As of this morning, all doors to the building were strung off with police tape and the alleyway entrances had been boarded up with plywood.

Warchock identified Dollar as a resident of the city of Marquette, but would not give a specific address.

The building at 231 Washington St. was most recently home to the 231 House of Muses, an alternative music venue. A fire in January of 2007 gutted the building, which has been vacant since.

City records indicate that the building is owned by Danowski LLC, which is based in Downer's Grove, Ill., an employee in the city's zoning office said. The city also has a letter requesting a change in billing address, which is signed "Bohdan Fedirko - Danowski LLC," the employee said.

In August 2011, Marquette real estate agent Dan Keller - who said he sold 231 W. Washington St. to its current owner after the fire - told The Mining Journal that there were no plans for the building.
