MARQUETTE, MI - Harriet Lucille Perket, 92, of Marquette, passed away Wednesday morning, September 12, 2012 at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital in Chicago.
Harriet was born on August 24, 1920 in Columbus, North Dakota, a daughter of the late Charles and Alvena (Tidi) King. Her family moved from Columbus to Wales, North Dakota in 1929 and to Langdon, North Dakota in 1931. She graduated from high school in 1938 taking an active part in drama and music during her high school years.
Harriet attended the University of North Dakota, graduating in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. While in college she served on the debate team, was a member of the Madrigal Music Club and was elected as an honorary member of the Forensic Fraternity.
After graduation, Harriet taught in several locations including Lake Zurich and Aurora, Illinois, Sault Ste Marie and Calumet, Michigan, and also at the former Graveraet High School in Marquette from 1950 -56. She also served on the faculty at Northern Michigan University, teaching office machines, shorthand and typing.
Harriet is survived by two children, Patty (Tom) Crofts of Lake Bluff, IL and J. Bond (Anne) Perket of Media, PA; also surviving are two cherished grandchildren, Jacob and Genna Crofts. Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband, R. Bond Perket who she married in 1946. He passed away on February 6, 2008. Also preceding her in death were two infant siblings, Royal King who died in 1913 and Jeanne King who died in 1917.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Peter Cathedral with the Rev. Ryan Ford officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends in the Bishop's Room of the cathedral one hour prior to the Mass.
