MARQUETTE - The body found floating in Wetmore Pond in Marquette Township Thursday has been identified as Amy Luella Janson, 25, of Marquette, who was reported missing in May of this year.

According to the Michigan State Police at the Negaunee Post, Janson was identified using dental records Friday morning.

Originally reported missing by family members, the search for Janson in May centered on Wetmore Pond after a backpack belonging to her was found near the pond shoreline.

A search was conducted with a canine unit and divers, but due to the depth of the silt on the lake bottom and lack of visibility, divers were not able to effectively search and clear the pond.

Thursday evening, hikers reported a body floating in the pond, described as badly decomposed, with an autopsy performed at Marquette General Hospital needed to confirm the sex of the subject.

Although foul play is not suspected, police said a cause of death has not yet been determined.

Assisting at the scene were MediRide EMS, the Marquette Township Fire Department, the Marquette County Sheriff Office and Northern Michigan University Public Safety.
