MARQUETTE - During an investigation into the disappearance of a Marquette man, Marquette city police discovered an unidentified body in the abandoned building at 231 W. Washington St. Friday afternoon.

Marquette City Police Department Chief Mike Angeli said the body of a white male was located in the building during a search for 34-year-old Shawn Michael Dollar, who was reported missing Thursday and who hadn't been seen since last Saturday. Angeli said it had not been determined whether the body that was found was Dollar.

"We've got what appears to be a deceased person," Angeli said. "That (the search for Dollar) is what lead us in this direction."

Representatives from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab had arrived at about 4 p.m. Friday and began taking pictures of the crime scene.

Marquette police Detective Capt. Gordon Warchock said Friday evening the investigation was continuing, but that the body did show signs of decomposition.

"It does look like the victim has been there for a period of time," Warchock said, which could indicate the body had been in the building possibly for a week. "There would be decomposition for a person who had been there that long."

As of press time, no positive identification of the body had been made and no cause of death had been determined.

Earlier in the day, friends and family of Dollar had gathered at ther nearby marquette Commons to organize a search for the missing man. Many of those who had gathered spent much of the afternoon near the crime scene, waiting for news from officials.
