MARQUETTE - Michigan State Police troopers said an autopsy was scheduled for this morning at Marquette General Hospital on a body discovered by hikers Thursday afternoon in Marquette Township.
Troopers said three female hikers found the body about 50 feet from the water's edge at Wetmore Pond, a bog situated off Marquette County Road 550, roughly seven miles north of downtown Marquette.
Police were contacted at about 6:40 p.m. and the body was recovered from the water by members of the Marquette County Sheriff's Office Dive Team.
Troopers said the body was badly decomposed and police were awaiting the autopsy results to conclusively determine the sex of the subject and the cause of death.
"Any cause of death would be speculating," Michigan State Police Sgt. Kevin Dowling said.
Personnel from the Michigan State Police forensic laboratory were expected to assist in the autopsy.
Troopers hoped to be able to use information gained in the autopsy to help identify the body.
Additional agencies assisting state police Thursday included the Northern Michigan University Public Safety Department, Marquette Township Fire Department and Marquette General Hospital ambulance service.
