MENOMINEE - The Marquette Senior High School girls tennis team made a long trip worth it by sweeping a pair of matches from Menominee and Marinette, Wis., on Thursday.
The Redettes edged Menominee 5-3 in a Great Northern Conference match and defeated Marinette 7-1 in a nonconference meet.
MSHS coach Derek Sandstrom noted the effort of No. 3 singles player Mallory Asano, who was involved in one of the four matches that went three sets. Marquette clinched the match by splitting those three-setters.
"It was a tough match against Menominee," Sandstrom said. "Mallory really stepped up for us today."
Asano registered a 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 victory, the third set a pro-style tiebreaker set.
In addition, the Redettes' No. 1 doubles tandem of Madalyn Connon and Laura Slavsky registered a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win.
Marquette also got wins from Maddy Gardiner at No. 1 singles, Hannah Johnson at No. 2 singles and Stina Jackson and Gabby Gencheff at No. 4 doubles.
Against Marinette, the Redettes recorded two-set victories in all seven match wins, while Amanda Gray suffered a tight 4-6, 6-4, 15-13 loss at No. 4 singles.
Sandstrom moved a number of players around, though Connon was able to finish off a two-win day after she moved over to No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash.
"We were able to get four JV girls into the match," Sandstrom said. "I was pleased by their effort and poise."
Gardiner and Asano also had two wins Thursday, those two singles players earlier moving to No. 1 doubles for another win, Slavsky changing partners and moving down to No. 3 doubles for a victory, and Gencheff and Jackson remaining together at No. 4 doubles and also winning again.
