ISHPEMING, Mich. - Pauline M. Toivonen, age 83, of 341 Deer Lake Road, Ishpeming, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility while in the loving care of her family.
Pauline was born in Detroit, Michigan, moved to the Ishpeming area at the age of 2. She was the daughter of Monica "Mona" and John Salson. She married Marvin Toivonen of Republic on October 29, 1949 in Negaunee.
Pauline was employed at the H.W. Gossard from 1946 until 1950. She lived in Ishpeming until 1959 when she moved with her family to Liberia, West Africa, where her husband was employed by Republic Steel Company as a drill supervisor. After 7 years they returned to Ishpeming until 1978 when they moved to Petticoat Lake and in 1998 they moved back to Ishpeming.

Pauline was employed at the West Ishpeming IGA as a cashier and as a Teacher's Aide for the Ishpeming School system. She was also was employed as a secretary for the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church while living at Petticoat Lake. She was Past President of the Petticoat Lake Association, Secretary for the Michigamme Senior citizen group and a member of the Mary Circle of Bethany Lutheran Church and the VASA Lodge.
Pauline enjoyed playing cribbage at the Ishpeming High Rise and the Twin City Cribbage league of Negaunee and her Tuesday Art class with Roger Junak, as well as dancing & doll making.
Pauline is survived by her husband of 62 years, Marvin, two children: Kathleen (Robert) Waters and Dale (Mary Ellen) Toivonen both of Ishpeming, four grandchildren: Christopher (Theresa) Salo of Negaunee, Pamela Waters of Ishpeming, Rachel (Jason) Argall of Ishpeming, Michael (Jennifer) Toivonen of Kathleen, GA, 7 great grandchildren: Griffin and Gavin Argall, Aili & Alex Toivonen, Tyler Quayle, Natalie and Camron Carlson, two sisters: Arlene (Paul) Dalpra of Crystal Falls, Jo Anne (Jerry) Elliott of Kingsford, a brother Charles Koskela of Green Bay, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant son Robert Dale, her parents John Salson, Monica Salson/Koskela and stepfather Nels Koskela.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 14, 2012 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Warren Geier officiating.
Friends may call the church on Friday from 12:00 noon until the time of service at 2:00 PM.
A dessert social will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.
