MANISTIQUE - Manistique took over the volleyball lead in the Mid-Peninsula Conference in exciting fashion Tuesday, earning a 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 18-25, 15-6 triumph over Gwinn.
"We came out hot in the fifth set," Emeralds' coach Amy Nixon said. "The kids showed a lot of desire. They really wanted this one. Also, our fans really got into the last set. They were on their feet. We certainly appreciated their support."
This marked the fourth straight five-set match for the Emeralds, who have won their last three to improve to 4-1 overall in dual meets and 3-0 in the M-PC.
"There's a lot of parity among the teams," Nixon said. "Tonight, we had six serving errors in the two sets we lost and three or less in the sets we won. Serving made the difference.
"We also passed the ball real well at times and not so well at other times."
Manistique's Kelsy Gonyea hit seven service aces along with three kills, while Monica Giles recorded nine kills and two blocks. Maryse Hinkson collected 24 assists and 26 digs and Raeanne Robinson had 27 digs.
"We had pretty good balance," Nixon said. "We spread it out. A lot of our hitters contributed tonight."
Manistique, which dropped the JV match, 25-23, 25-12, travels to Norway on Thursday.

POWERS - With Jenna Hach and Katie Immel leading the way, the Munising High School girls volleyball posted its first win of the season Tuesday, 25-21, 13-25, 28-26, 25-20.
Hach posted 12 digs, four kills and eight assists, while Immel recorded 18 digs, three aces, a block and a kill.
"It's nice to get that first win," Munising coach Myra Lloyd said, "but we were very slow. It took us a while to get charged up."
After the Mustangs "lost their focus" in the second game, they came back with a 28-26 victory to take control.
"We started every game behind, but turned it around in the third game," Lloyd said. "Being able to win that game gave us some fire for that last set."
Terri Bond chipped in 13 digs and Katherine Wendt four kills and two blocks for Munising. Megan Watson contributed 10 digs.
