MARQUETTE - Ishpeming, Marquette and Negaunee all made the top five among the bigger schools in the opening Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association prep football poll of the season.
L'Anse, meanwhile, gained a spot in the Little Five.
In the big five voting, coach Jeff Olson's Ishpeming squad (3-0) trails only leaders Kingsford (3-0) and runner-up Menominee (3-0). The Flivvers picked up three No. 1 votes from the panel of five for 22 points; the Maroons garnered 18 points; and the Hematites - with two top ballots - collected 17 points.
Ishpeming will play at Westwood (2-1) on Friday.
Coach Dave L'Huillier's Marquette Redmen (3-0), with only two more wins needed to clinch an automatic playoff berth with their eight-game schedule, are ranked fourth with 12 points. The Redmen are scheduled to host Escanaba (1-2) on Friday.
Negaunee, which came from behind to beat Gladstone Friday, 36-34, holds down the No. 5 spot. Coach Paul Jacobson's Miners, who will play at Iron Mountain (2-1) Friday, picked up six points.
In the Little Five, Forest Park (3-0) with two top votes, is ranked No. 1 with 22 points.
Coach Mark Leaf's L'Anse Purple Hornets (3-0), who ripped Ontonagon 45-6 last Friday, have gained the No. 4 slot in the UPSSA voting with eight points.
