MARQUETTE - It would be an understatement to say the Marquette Senior High School girls cross country team was perfect Monday.

Coach Dale Phillips' Redettes took the top seven individual places to run away with the annual Marquette Foxes and Hounds Cross Country Invitational.

Led by winner Lindsey Rudden, MSHS finished first with 15 points. Negaunee (68), Gwinn (72), Westwood (82) and Ishpeming (134) followed.

The event saw the No. 7 runners from each team starting the 5-kilometer race, then the sixth, fifth and so on runners going off at 20-second intervals.

Rudden claimed top honors with an effort of 21 minutes, 39 seconds on a course at MSHS, with teammates Calla Martysz (22:31) and Liana Storm (22:44) placing two-three, respectively.

Redettes Abby Potts, Shelby Ross, Nichole Mackey and Martha Storm, in order, rounded out the top seven.

"The girls are so strong. They run so well as a group," Phillips said. "Once the 3-7 runners caught up, they all came in together. It shows our depth."

The top performers for each of the other schools were Clara Churchill of Negaunee (24:59, eighth); Anna Honkala of Westwood (25:19, 10th); Brittney Dunklee of Gwinn (27:40, 13th) and Christina Leppanen of Ishpeming (29:47, 20th).

For the boys, MSHS placed first with 24 team points, with Negaunee second at 33. Gwinn came in third with 81, followed by Ishpeming (125), Westwood (136) and North Star (155).

Marquette's Lance Rambo claimed top honors with a 20:42 clocking. Negaunee's Keenan Gantz placed second at 20:50, with Marquette's Leighton Locke placing third at 20:56.

"We ran four freshmen and a sophomore," Phillips said, noting MSHS claimed three of the top five finishes with Alex Wyble (21:09) placing fifth.

The No. 1 finishers for the other competing teams were: Matt Moilanen of Gwinn (21:47, 11th); Peter Leppanen of Ishpeming (23:43, 22nd); Skyler Dakota of Westwood (23:06, 19th); and Casey L'Huillier of North Star (23:29, 20th).

Trevor Slinkhard of Marquette won the boys' junior varsity race in 22:07; the Redettes' Paulina Puskala took the girls' JV title in 23:09.
