Northern Michigan cross country team takes first at Wisconsin-Parkside

SOMERS, Wis. - Placing six runners in the top 14, the Northern Michigan University women's cross country team placed first Saturday in the Midwest Collegiate Open at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Wildcats - led by junior Mandy Dye's fifth-place finish in 18 minutes and 57 seconds - scored 47 team points, beating 16 other schools.

"The team ran an excellent and smart race today against some very good competition," NMU coach Jenny Ryan said.

NMU junior Mallory Celaya finished seventh in 19:13.3, freshman Mary Kate Cerelli 10th (19:15.3, senior Rita Woitas 12th (19:22.3), sophomore Olivia Howard 13th (19:27.5) and Megan Edic 14th (19:31.9).

NMU freshman Alex Bott of Marquette completed the Wildcats' scoring with a 19:48 for 22nd.

UW-Parkside finished second with 77 team points. UW-Green Bay (78) was third.

Tech finished ninth with 273 team points, with Amanda Halonen leading the way with a 19:51.7, good for 26th place.
