MARQUETTE - Rio Tinto will begin its most recent series of community forums next week, with a session at the Powell Township School in Big Bay.
The five two-hour sessions are designed to provide communities with updates on the Eagle Mine and Humboldt Mill and to take feedback and questions from the public. Rio Tinto Eagle Mine President Adam Burley said the company will also roll out its "community score card" initiative during the sessions.
All of the forums will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. and are scheduled for Tuesday in Big Bay, Wednesday at the Michigamme Township Hall in Michigamme, Sept. 17 at the Humboldt Township Hall in Champion, Sept. 24 at the Ramada Inn in Marquette and Sept. 26 at the American Legion Hall in L'Anse.
"A lot of progress has been made at Eagle since our last series of community forums in 2011," Rio Tinto said in an announcement. "We're excited about Eagle's development and we have a lot to share with the community."
Burley said the "community score card" was developed over the past several months.
"Through a variety of different forums throughout the course of this year, we've been asking community members what aspects of Eagle Mine's performance are important to you," Burley said. "And we've incorporated that feedback. We've produced a community score card and now we intend, on a regular basis, through community forums to ask the community to basically score us on how they see us performing against those criteria that they told us were important."
Burley said he's "quite excited to see how that develops."
"I think that it really is leading practice, it's aligned with this vision of being world-class," Burley said. "I'm not aware of other examples that really, truly has a community scoring a company's performance in such a transparent manner."
