To the Journal editor:
I am writing in response to the statement made by Marquette County Republican Chairmn Dan Adamini in response to the (recent) presence of protesters outside the local Republican Party headquarters.
Mr. Adamini correctly stated that 49 percent of Americans do not pay federal income taxes. He then went on to state that "this segment of the population contributes nothing to the economy and absorbs what the Americans who do pay federal income tax contribute."
This could not be further from the truth. The majority of these people are hard working, productive Americans who pay payroll taxes, FICA, social security and other taxes. When all of these liabilities are met they may have too little left to qualify for federal income taxes.
The majority of these hard working people are wage earners who ultimately earn less than $20,000 per year. They are the people who grow and harvest your food, clean your clothes, scrub your floors, repair your cars, maintain your homes, take care of the elderly, etc.
I certainly value the contributions of these honest, hard working Americans more than I do the contributions of the people who benefit from the hard work of others and place their obscene profits in off shore tax shelters to avoid paying federal income taxes.
I would also remind him that a significant percentage of Americans who earn more than a million dollars a year do not pay any federal income taxes and also, because their income is unearned (capital gains) do not pay payroll, FICA or other taxes either.
