Japan Sister City delegates to visit

MARQUETTE - Delegates from Marquette's Sister City of Higashiomi, Japan, will visit Marquette from Wednesday through Sept. 12. There will be an open community reception at 7 p.m. Friday in the Peter White Public Library Community Room.

The six delegates include Yoji Ito, a retired computer engineer; Ai Nakamura, a college student at the Doshisha Women's College; Mika Shibata, a college student studying pharmacy; Tamie Yamanaka, a leader secretary of International Friendship; Rumi Nakazawa, a city hall lifelong educator; and Elko Ikeuchi, who works in the office of the Women's Association of Rehabilitation Aid.

Artists sought for juried sale

MARQUETTE - The city of Marquette Arts and Culture Center will hold its 2012 Holiday Art Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 1 at the center in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

To be considered for the jurying process, artist are asked to submit a self-addressed stamped envelope along with six jpeg copies or six photographs of their artwork.

Mail artist images along with the application to: City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center, 300 W. Baraga Ave, Marquette, MI 49855. If emailing the application with jpeg images, expect a response within two business days. The deadline will be Sept. 7. Failure to abide by the criteria will result in immediate disqualification.

Booth size and space prices include: Booth spaces cost $65 for 10-by-6 foot, and $45 for 6-by-6 foot. Cost is $7 for a 6-by-3 foot table rental.

Set up time will be noon to 6 p.m. on Nov. 30 and 8 to 9 a.m. on Dec. 1. Artists will be notified with an acceptance by Sept. 21. For more information, call 228-0472 or email arts-culture@mqtcty.org.

Harvest Festival at Van Riper

VAN RIPER - Van Riper State Park Harvest will hold its Harvest Festival the weekends of Sept. 7-9, 14-16 and 21-23. The event will include costume contests, site decorating contests, a haunted hike, trick-or-treating and horse drawn carriage rides. A Recreation Passport is required for entry into Van Riper State Park and can be obtained by checking "yes" for the $10 Recreation Passport ($5 for motorcycles) when renewing a license plate through the Secretary of State by mail, kiosk, online at www.expresssos.com or at branch offices.

Nonresidents can purchase the passport for $29 annually, $8 daily at any state park or recreation area or through www.michigan.gov/estore.

Susan Werner in

concert at NMU

MARQUETTE - Northern Nights, the performing arts series of Northern Michigan University, will hold a concert with Chicago-based singer-songwriter Susan Werner.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Forest Roberts Theatre. The Goldmine Girls, a local folk duo composed of sisters Gentian and RiLee Waller, will open for Werner.

Cost for advance tickets is $2 for students and children; $10 for NMU faculty, staff and seniors 60 and older; $15 for the general public; and $30 for family passes (two adults and up to three children, advance only). Woodturner at symposium

ISHPEMING - Tom Larson, a professional woodturner from Brainerd, Minn., will demonstrate at a symposium held by the Superiorland Woodturners from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Bell Forest Products in Ishpeming.

Fall festival at St. Rita Parish

TRENARY - St. Rita Parish of Trenary will hold its annual Fall Festival beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9 on the parish grounds.

Sunday mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., and a harvest dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $9 for adults and $4 for children over age 5.

Pendill Wall nominations sought

MARQUETTE - Nominations are being sought for the Marquette Area Public Schools A. Felch Pendill Wall of Excellence.

Criteria for the Wall of Excellence award is as follows: "An alumnus of the Marquette Schools, an A. Felch Pendill Wall of Excellence honoree must have distinguished him or herself in a chosen occupation or profession; demonstrated service to others through commitment to public or community service; and demonstrated his or her time and contributions to philanthropy for the betterment of mankind."

'Rocky' auditions slated

NEGAUNEE - The Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council will hold open auditions for the community musical "The Rocky Horror Show" from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Vista Theater in downtown Negaunee. Those auditioning should be prepared to sing, dance and act. Ages 18 and older may audition and no experience is necessary. A large cast is needed. ESCANABA - The Upper Peninsula Chapter 16 of the State Employee Retirees Association will hold its fall luncheon at noonSept. 10 at the Highland Golf Club, seven miles west of Escanaba on U.S. 2/41.
