Negaunee falls to Iron Mountain, North Dickinson in volleyball triangular

NEGAUNEE - Negaunee dropped a pair of high school volleyball contests Thursday at home, losing to Mid-Peninsula Conference rival Iron Mountain, 3-2, and non-conference foe North Dickinson 2-1.

Iron Mountain rallied from a 2-1 deficit for a 24-26, 25-13, 13-25, 25-17, 15-8 win.

For Negaunee (1-1 MPC, 1-4 overall), Ashley Veale led with 18 kills. Haley Blake had 16 kills and Rosalie Anderson had six kills.

Setter Hannah Laurila had 17 assists. Blake had 10 digs and eight aces while Anderson and Veale each had nine digs.

Kristi Rajala had the lone block.

North Dickinson rallied from a 1-0 hole to win 18-25, 25-23, 15-12.

Veale had nine digs, eight kills and three blocks. Jayda Johnson had six assists and an ace.

SC 3, Big Bay 0

At Eben, Superior Central eked out an opening-game victory, then made some adjustments to blank Big Bay de Noc, 25-23, 25-12, 25-12.

Senior Kelsey Coleman had five kills, nine aces and four assists, while senior Lindsey Richmond added seven assists, five aces and two kills.

"Big Bay had some nice servers that gave us some trouble in serve receive in the first game," SC coach Kris Bray said. "We adjusted well in the second and third games and handled the serves much better."

The Cougars' JV team also won, 25-21, 12-25, 15-9.

Norway 3, Westwood 0

At Norway, Melanie Kurth made 12 kills to lead the Knights to a 25-10, 25-11, 25-19 M-PC victory.

"We played a well tonight and worked hard," Knights coach Nicole Anderson said. "The girls are jelling as a team and therefore our teamwork and communication is getting better."

Knights servers combined for 22 aces, led by Bailey Grayvold's eight.

Norway also won the JV match, 25-12, 8-25, 25-11.
