IRON MOUNTAIN - Paul Brooks scored three times and Taylor Huotari threw for two more as Iron Mountain pounced on Gwinn early for a 45-21 victory to even its record Thursday evening at Mountaineer Stadium.

"It was nice to get back on track," IM coach Robin Marttila said. "We got off to a good start in that first quarter. That's what you want to see."

The Mountaineers (1-1 overall, 1-1 Mid-Peninsula Conference) scored three first-quarter touchdowns against the Modeltowners (0-2, 0-1) and upped the margin to 45-0 by halftime.

Two bad Gwinn snaps on punts and good punt returns by Huotari and Shawn Sexton helped IM work from a short field in the first half, when the Mountaineers scored on all six of their possessions.

In fact, the Mountaineers went into halftime with a 45-0 lead despite not recording a single first down.

Zach Jacobs, who completed 4 of 5 for 91 yards, found Brooks for an 11-yard TD and Tony Ward for a 56-yarder to open the scoring.

Huotari made it 19-0 after one with 23-yard TD run later in the quarter.

A bad snap by Gwinn and long punt return by IM set up the Mountaineers for short field in their next two scoring drives.

Late, Jacobs exited for a play to rehydrate only to have sub Gerry Pirkola throw a 36-yard TD strike to Huotari on fourth down.

Stats in the contest were a bit skewed with the short field preventing the Mountaineers from really establishing any sort of a ground game.

Gwinn totaled just six yards of offense in the first half before piling up more than 200 on the ground after halftime. Owen DeVooght finished with 129 yards on 17 trips, scoring from 13 yards out for the first Gwinn points late in the third quarter.

Cody Norman broke loose for a 42-yard score, while quarterback Justin Nyquist went around the left side for a 52-yard scamper in the game's final minute.
