Negaunee remains unbeaten on tennis courts, Redettes and Patriots play to draw

GLADSTONE - The Negaunee Miners girls tennis team improved to 6-0-1 on the season with a 6-2 victory at Gladstone on Wednesday.

The Miners swept singles competition with Abbi Kill winning at the No. 1 spot, Allison Carlson winning at No. 2, Kayla Hakala winning at No. 3 and Dana DeBretto winning at No. 4. All four wins came in straight sets.

"Abbi Kill was solid today and mixed her shots well," Miners coach Kyle Saari said. "She's maturing into a nice No. 1. Singles were strong and able to carry us again."

Gladstone prevailed at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, however, the Negaunee duos of Kylee Taavola and Jordyn LaFreniere at No. 3 and Kylee Taavola and Jordyn LaFreniere at No. 4 both came out on top in three-set battles.

The Miners return to the courts after the Labor Day weekend on Tuesday to host Gwinn at 4 p.m.

MSHS 4, Westwood 4

ISHPEMING - The Patriots and Redettes split both the singles and doubles matches to force a deadlock.

Westwood scored straight-set victories from Sarah Massie at No. 1 singles and Megan Chapman at No. 3 singles.

Kara Harrington and Alexis Forchini won at No. 1 doubles in straight sets while Taryn Moyle and Katie Rankinen needed a second-set tiebreaker to prevail in straight sets at No. 2 doubles.

"A very evenly played meet that included splitting both the doubles and singles," Westwood coach Chris Jackson said. "Just about every meet this season is coming down to a couple of close matches, even points in some cases."

Marquette's Hannah Johnson won in straight sets at No. 2 singles and Eliza Annelin needed three sets to take the No. 4 singles match.

The Taylor Rovin and Brianna Buhl won in straight sets at No. 3 doubles while teammates Danielle Nestor and Mackenzie Verbeke rallied from a set down to win No. 4 doubles in three.

Munising 7, Gwinn 1

GWINN - The Modeltowners lone victory of the afternoon came from Madison Forrester and Alli Johnson, who won their No. 4 doubles match in straight sets.

Munising's Jenna Hach, Eve Gendron, Emily DesJardins and Katie Immel posted victories in singles action. The duos of Sheena Sowa and Megan McLaren, Adele Gendron and Sadie Cornish, as well as Alex Paquette and Izzy Nebel rolled through their doubles matches for Mustang wins.
