Swanson tops qualifying at Marquette Golf Club tourney

MARQUETTE - Aaron Swanson claimed medalist honors Sunday for the Marquette Golf Club's men's championship qualifying rounds.

He carded a 78 on the Greywalls course to finish the 36 holes with a 149 total. Mike Devine placed second with a 152 (78-74) and K.C. Bjorne took third with a 154 (78-76).

Other scores of those who qualified for the championship flight were: Chad Wester, 74-81-155; Mike Marietta, 81-76-157; Michael Parks, 83-75-158; Ben Johnson, 79-79-158; Dan Viitala, 75-83-158; Kenn Hruska, 83-76-159; Brock Micklow, 83-80-163; and Ed Grimes, Jr., 83-81-164.

Also, Jim Higgins, 81-83-164; Austin Hummell, 75-89-165; Bob Luke, Jr., 83-82-165; and Dan Nygard, 84-82-166.

Nygard won a sudden-death playoff with Dan McCutcheon for the 15th and final spot.

Defending MGC champion Dennis Hruska has an automatic bid in the top flight.

Match play will begin Saturday with the following pairings:

Upper Bracket: Dennis Hruska vs. Nygard; Johnson vs. Viitala; Bjorne vs. Higgins; and Wester vs. Grimes, Jr.

Lower Bracket: Swanson vs. Luke. Jr.; Parks vs. Kenn Hruska; Devine vs. Hummell; and Marietta vs. Micklow.
