Senior Center review considered

August 27, 2012
By KYLE WHITNEY - Journal Staff Writer (kwhitney@miningjournal.net) , The Mining Journal

MARQUETTE?- The Marquette City Commission tonight will decide whether to award a bid to review the Marquette Senior Center.

Earlier this month, the city's Senior Task Force recommended the bid go to UPEA Engineers and Architects, of Ishpeming.

The company that is ultimately awarded the bid will be asked to do a thorough evaluation of the current facility and to provide a plan for the future. The plan will include considerations of parking, mass transit options, Americans with Disabilities Act compliance and universal design principles.

The city has set aside $10,000 in the fiscal year 2012-3012 budget for the review.

The commission will also look to award a contract for a sanitary sewer relocation project along South Front Street.

City staff have recently done televising work in the area of the Front Street and Genesee Street intersection and have reported that the sewer line is close to collapsing.

City staff will recommend the commission award the job to Oberstar Inc. in the amount of $157,089. The work will be funded as a part of the bond issue for fiscal year 2011-2012 projects.

Kyle Whitney can be reached at 906-228-2500, ext. 250.
