A downside to living with guys

A Northern View

At the beginning of the summer I was beginning to become desperate for a roommate - to the point that I was considering living with a complete stranger.

I did, however, luck out. I ended up living with two friends I met through marching band. Those two friends happen to be males.

At first I was just excited to have a place to live. That feeling eventually wore off and I was left with the thought of living with two guys and no other girls. As you can imagine, my father wasn't exactly thrilled about this but, oddly, I was.

As most women know, girls can be kind of catty and there can be a lot of drama living with them - so the first thing that excited me was the thought of not having to deal with that. I've been living with the guys for about a month now and so far that's been true. I also don't see that changing anytime soon.

Then a couple of my girl friends brought up a semi-valid point: guys can be messy. This worry has, so far, been put to rest. My roommates are very tidy guys and have even thanked me for being so, too, because they've had a previous roommate who wasn't.

So everything has been going better than expected living with two male roommates. But then, this past week, the convenience of having a female roommate really hit home.

I've only had two other roommates in my life and they were both amazing. One of the best things about living together was that we could borrow clothes, shoes, makeup and hair products from each other. This isn't so easy to do with male roommates.

Just last week, I was getting ready to go out. While looking in my closet, I thought the one thing almost every woman thinks: "I have nothing to wear." Before, I would have just walked out of my room and asked my roommate to borrow something. There was never a problem.

Now, if I want to borrow something, it pretty much requires making an appointment and driving across town.

It never occurred to me until this past week that not being able to borrow from a girlfriend would be a major trade-off for having two male roommates. All these years, I took it for granted that I could just poke my head out of my room and ask to borrow a different color of nail polish.

I won't lie, having a female roommate for those reasons would make things more convenient. But my current roommates are pretty good - for guys.
