MARQUETTE - Two important job vacancies have been filled at Sawyer International Airport.
Marquette County Administrator Scott Erbisch said has announced the hiring of a new airport manager and a director of Sawyer operations.
Duane Duray, who is currently the airport manager for the Gogebic-Iron County Airport, has accepted the airport manager's job and will start work at Sawyer the second week of October. Erbisch said Duray has been employed at the Gogebic-Iron County Airport since 1992 and the manager there since 2006.
The airport manager's position was vacated May 1 when former airport manager Keith Kaspari left the post, after nearly a decade of service, to take a job as deputy executive director at the Capital Region Airport Authority in Lansing. Randy Sundell, maintenance supervisor at Sawyer, had taken on the lead role at the airport until an airport manager was hired.
Steve Schenden has been named the new director of operations at Sawyer.
When Erbisch was hired as the county administrator in March, the vacancy was created. Erbisch replaced Steve Powers, who left the administrator's job after 15 years for a similar position with the city of Ann Arbor. Schenden, a civil engineer, was then hired to provide assistance in the Sawyer operations manager position until a permanent manager was hired.
"Steve has been with us on a temporary basis for the past several months and will assume the role of director effective immediately," Erbisch said.
Schenden had been an employee with Marquette County during the K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base transition process as a project manager and also worked as an engineering consultant in the aviation, environmental, and mining fields.
