MARQUETTE - Just in time for the start of school, bike racks won by four area schools and one local community during the 2012 Healthy Weight Journal Community Wellness Challenge are being installed.
Several months ago, area schools were invited to join the challenge, with the schools with the highest number of participating students earning metal bike racks.
The racks were recently installed at Father Marquette Middle School, Bothwell Middle School, Sandy Knoll Elementary School and Aspen Ridge School, as well as four racks throughout the winning community of Gwinn.
"Rewarding the kids that participated helps to engage them in future programs," said Deb Sergey, Marquette General Hospital dietitian and HWJ organizer.
The purchase of the racks was sponsored by the Marquette County ACHIEVE Team and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
A group of ACHIEVE Team members and local health care leaders met Wednesday morning at the Father Marquette Middle School to celebrate the installation of the racks.
"It was on its last bike holding venture," school administrator Maryann Ferns said of the building's former bike rack. "It had been there for quite some time. It was perfect timing."
Ferns said she anticipated the rack not only being used by middle school students, but also by others from the community.
"Anyone is welcome to use it," she said.
