Cliffs Natural Resources celebrates operation of gigantic mine shovel

August 20, 2012
The Mining Journal

Cliffs Natural Resources delegates held a ribbon-cutting ceremony with representatives from the Lake Superior Community Partnership and Marquette County Ambassadors to celebrate putting the new P&H 4100XPC-AC mining shovel into operation. The new electric mining shovel is the largest shovel in operation at Cliffs North American mines. The shovel has a bucket capacity of 60-cubic-yards, allowing it to lift 120-tons of broken ore or rock in a single scoop. The current shovel fleet has bucket capacities of 40 cubic yards and 70-ton per scoop rating. The older shovels can load a 320-ton production truck with four bucket loads. In comparison, the new shovel can load a 320-ton production truck with three bucket loads, decreasing loading times and increasing efficiency. The shovel, which was assembled onsite over the past several months, cost about $30 million.
