ISHPEMING - Three people were sent to Bell Hospital following an Ishpeming apartment fire early this morning.

Firefighters from the Ishpeming Volunteer Fire Department were called to 701 W. Empire St., the Canda Manor Apartments, at 1:02 a.m. upon the report of a structure fire, where they found a third floor apartment filled with heavy smoke and flames.

Entering the apartment, the firefighters found one unresponsive male subject lying inside. After carrying him to safety, they quickly contained the fire, which was confined to the kitchen area of the apartment.

Two residents in a neighboring apartment were also treated at the hospital for minor smoke inhalation. None of the victims' names were released and no conditions were available.

The kitchen area of the apartment suffered smoke and minor water damage, with some smoke damage to the rest of the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Three other families were displaced by the fire, with two being housed at a local motel with help from the Pigs 'n' Heat fund and the other family is staying with relatives. The American Red Cross is also assisting the families.

The fire department responded with 20 firefighters and three trucks, remaining on the scene for about 1 hours.
