Township candidates advance in primaries

MARQUETTE - Residents in a number of Marquette County townships cast votes in Tuesday's primary election to determine candidates for township posts in the November general election.

Candidates winning the partisan primaries will be placed on the November ballot.

In Champion Township's race for township supervisor, Democrat Tina Koski received 63 votes while fellow Democrats Lee Tonge and Rona Cardew received 26 and 8 votes, respectively.

In the Democratic race for Champion Township clerk, Catherine Bowen Plankey received 58 votes while opponent Rhonda Boshears received 37.

In Republic, incumbent Supervisor Gary Johnson received 193 votes while opponent Paula Rose received 148. Both Johnson and Rose are Democrats.

A close Republic Township Treasurer race saw newcomer Kristina L. Koski receive 184 votes over fellow Democrat and incumbent Faye Ann Mattila, who gained 161 votes.

The Ishpeming Township Democratic race for treasurer saw Kristin Thornton gain 287 votes over Linda Beauchaine with 221 votes.

In Negaunee Township, incumbent Supervisor William Carlson beat out Steve Laine 240 votes to 114. Both are Democrats.

The Sands Township race for supervisor also pitted two Democrats against each other. Incumbent David Kallio received 169 votes while opponent Rickey Wilson received 89.

Finally, the West Branch Township Treasurer primary went to incumbent Republican Laurie Karpinen. She received 78 votes to fellow Republican Donna Oliver's 31 votes.
