Negaunee passes equipment millage

NEGAUNEE - The city of Negaunee will be able to move forward with the purchase of some much needed large equipment, after voters approved a request for 1.5 mills dedicated specifically to capital equipment.

Tuesday, Negaunee city voters cast 441 yes votes to 166 no votes in passing the millage, which is expected to raise $123,966 in its first year.

That money will allow the city to purchase several large items - addressing vehicles and equipment in need of repair or replacement which city officials said have been put off for several years due to constraints in the general fund.

In particular, the city plans to buy a new salt-sander truck and also plans to refurbish the city fire department's ladder truck instead of purchasing new. The millage money is also slated to be used to purchase new patrol cars for the police department and other items that could not be easily financed by the general fund.
